Backups. You SHOULD do them, but do you?

September 30th, 2011

I have a friend that I play ball with that had his hard drive crash.  I went over and looked at it, heard the click of death, and knew I wasn’t going to be much help.  He wound up sending his drive off for recovery to the tune of $750.  That’s why it’s important to backup your hard drive.  Whether you use one of the online backup tools like Carbonite, or have a USB drive by your machine and use SyncBack to back it up, you really should just do it.

mal_tidies-12, random strange pages, sparrow.sys, redirecting google searches. Pulling my hair out!!

June 23rd, 2010

This issue began with a user calling saying when they did a google search, occasionally they would get the page they clicked on.  But more often, they would get redirected to a much different page, most times advertising.   Normally, there will be outward signs something is going on.  One of the common issues is with something like Antivirus 2009.  It will throw up a legit looking scan window saying you are infected.  You click OK, or even cancel, and it will infect you.  Running Windows system restore will fix the problem most times, or a combination of system restore and Malwarebytes.

Not this time.

I began some google searches and came up with a few things to try.  There is a tool that will reset your TCP/IP setting, that didn’t work either.  I also read about a script in Firefox that could be causing issues, and since this person mainly uses Firefox, I gave the No Scrip addon for Firefox a try.  That worked OK and I said try it for a bit and let me know.  No go, Internet Explorer was having issue as well.

My next try was to just take the drive out and scan with an antivirus product and Malwarebytes on my desktop.  Malwarebytes was running through the files and when it hit the WINDOWS\system32\drivers\sparrow.sys file, my antivirus program it threw up a screen saying the file was infected with the Mal_TIDIES-12 virus.  Most information on this virus is pretty vague, but it doesn’t seem like a real well spread virus.  I let the scan finish and nothing else was found.  I put the drive back in the machine, and we have been working good for several days now.  Sometimes you just have to take the drive out and scan it.

If you are looking for a product to view a drive, check this out: http://bit.ly/aEEOF0

It’s a Thermaltake SATA usb device that will take a laptop hard drive or desktop drive and connect to another desktop via USB.  Works great for me, just make sure you do have a SATA drive, not an IDE one.  If your machine is pretty new, you probably have a SATA drive.

Acrobat Reader won’t open?? Kill it!

June 22nd, 2010

If Adobe Acrobt reader will not open and you have used it before on your machine,

there is a good chance there is still a process running that will not allow Acrobat to open correctly or at all.  Go to your task manager, and take a look at the processes tab.  It is where I go to immediately when I am having a program misbehave.  Be careful what you kill, but in this case Acrobat is pretty obvious.  Kill the process and try reloading Acrobat.  I bet it works now…..

How to: Inserting or Embedding a PDF into Word

June 10th, 2010

It’s a pretty simple task to insert a PDF into a Word document so that the pdf file will go along with the document when you send it off via email.  Follow the images and I will show you how.  First, under the Insert Ribbon, click the Object button.

From there,

choose the Adobe Acrobt Document Object type, the click the Display as icon checkbox.  This will have your pdf file embed in the Word document so it goes along with the file.  Click OK

Choose the file you want to insert into the document, and you will get something that looks like this.  Notice the Double-Click to Open Acrobat Document in the lower left.  Send the file on, and the person you sent it to should be able to double-click the icon and the PDF file will open up in the program associated with .pdf files.
